Breast feeding in public

Breastfeeding In Public – To Do Or Not To Do?Breastfeeding in public is not against the law but in many countries, including some parts of South Africa, there is still a definite stigma attached to breastfeeding in public and this has caused a lot of moms to feel uncomfortable when they are feeding their baby in public.
Around Africa, in countries such as Nigeria, Zambia and Zimbabwe and even in many parts of South Africa, mothers breastfeeding their babies in public is an accepted custom and a daily way of life, while in many developed, westernised countries, such as Canada, breastfeeding in public is done but is a rare sight. In Muslim countries, like Afghanistan breastfeeding in public is not permitted at all and what’s, nursing mothers are not even allowed to feed their babies in the presence of their own family members. The question however is – should South African mothers be encouraged to breastfeed in public, and if breastfeeding in public becomes the norm, should the nursing mother follow breastfeeding etiquette?

Breastfeeding etiquette

Even though breastfeeding is perfectly natural, there are some members of our society and even some establishment owners who are of the opinion that breastfeeding an infant in a public place is not the done thing and shouldn’t be done. In a restaurant or coffee shop, a few men may feel uncomfortable at the sight of a woman readying herself to breastfed. While at the same time, many self-conscious nursing mothers are not particularly eager to ‘expose’ themselves in a public place and as such, they use a blanket, nursing shawl or light throw to conceal the act. Perhaps the first rule in breastfeeding etiquette is to realise that not everyone will share your views on breastfeeding in public and in order to avoid offended onlookers (and even disgusted gawks) and maybe a few negative comments, it is best to be discreet. This is by no means a suggestion that the act of nursing a baby is distasteful, but for the modest mom, covering up and being discreet will allow for privacy and it will not offend others who are not quite ready to accept the fact that breastfeeding is perfectly natural and beautiful!
A lot of breastfeeding moms feel that it’s good breastfeeding etiquette to notify fellow diners of their intentions. This depends largely on who the fellow diners are - if you are out with a group of moms or old friends, they will undoubtedly have no qualms about breastfeeding. If your diners happen to be your partner’s work colleagues, or soccer friends – it may be considered good etiquette to inform the group that you’ll be breastfeeding. Not only will the mom be able to gauge their attitude at the table, but at the same time, the group will not be too surprised when the mom starts to breastfeed their hungry infant.
The most important of all breastfeeding etiquette rules is to respect others! By respecting others, nursing mothers need not be banished to public toilets or baby-change rooms (or remain out of public areas) – it simply means to breastfeed discreetly. Many South African mothers feel that there is no shame (and rightfully so) with public breastfeeding, but more reserved mothers are happy not to draw attention to themselves and become breastfeeding exhibitionists.
It is not illegal to breastfeed in public and due to this fact, a nursing mother cannot be asked to stop breastfeeding when in public, nor can she be asked to leave an establishment because she is breastfeeding her baby!

Breastfeeding made easy

There are so many items on the market which make breastfeeding easy, such as nursing bras which can be quickly and easily fastened and unfastened with one hand, as well as specially-designed breastfeeding tops or dresses, that allow moms to quickly gain access to her baby’s food source. Even regular button-up tops work well, and a few buttons can be released when needed. Resourceful moms who are sewing whizzes can use their existing garments to create their own designer ‘breastfeeding’ wear, and sew in hidden slits and panels which cover the nipple and lower breast but which still permit discreet breastfeeding.

What the public feels about breastfeeding in public?

Even in 2011, a large number of South African men and women feel that a woman breastfeeding her baby in an open space is obscene. As a nation, South Africa is divided on whether it is right to breastfeed or not to breastfeed in public! In countries like Australia almost 50% of the population believe that breastfeeding should be done behind closed doors and if the need arises to feed a baby in public, it should be done as discreetly as possible.
Perhaps one of the main reasons why people are against breastfeeding in public is because of their own comfort level. Many feel uncomfortable when seeing a woman with a breast out with her baby latched on to it, and what’s more they believe the natural sight forces them to look away or they feel uncertain as to how to react in the situation.
Here are two extracts on how some South Africans feel about breastfeeding in public (published in IOL news, August 12 2010)
“I think its caring and loving your baby, we adults we eat whenever we feel hungry but an infant should wait for privacy.... just don’t understand am a health worker and a breastfeeding counsellor I feel so impressed if I see a mother bonding with her baby through breastfeeding”
“Hell NO!!!! Keep them milk factories to yourselves ladies. Privacy. First sicko who takes a good look and all hell is going to break loose, he being the pervert. You didn't copulate in public to get preggies, which is the reason your glands are filled with mother’s milk, so don't flaunt the result of your copulation (not the kid, the milk factories). Nee sies man! I have three kids and definitely wouldn't appreciate my wife showing her mammary glands to the world at large”

Breastfeeding in public – to do or not to do?

For the nursing mom who feels at ease with breastfeeding in a public place – you are fulfilling your maternal duties and feeding your baby in the most natural way possible. To those moms who are not against breastfeeding in public but who feel a tad embarrassed – practice makes perfect and after a the first few feeds, breastfeeding in an open space will soon become a lot easier!
The main reasons why a lot of moms opt not to breastfeed is because of the stigma that is attached to public breastfeeding. Breastfeeding support groups and pro-breastfeeding moms believe that if society adopted a different attitude towards breastfeeding in public, far more mothers would be more willing to try breastfeeding.

Versace and medusa article

The Versace Logo: A Representation of the Head of Medusa

Connecting Modern Fashion and Myth

Phedre de Feuillide

Greek Mythology is a topic which almost everyone studies in school, and which oddly enough, can befound influencing us in our daily modern lives. Everyone knows that Greece was the birthplace of democracy; basically it is where the American idea of government comes from, and has even influenced our ideas of heroes and villains. Not everyone however, is aware of how prolific Greek mythology is in today's media. Many companies have taken names or logos which take their meaning from Greek mythology; companies like NIKE, named after the goddess of victory, or the product Ajax, named for a hero of the Trojan war.Gianni Versace's clothing line has also taken its cue from the past.
The Versace logo shows a representation of the head of Medusa: a woman who was transformed into a monster after offending the gods. She was punished for allowing the god Posidon to seduce her in the temple of the goddess Aphrodite. Her hair, which had once been her most glorified attribute, was turned into snakes. As the story goes, anyone who looked at her would be turned into stone. Perhaps this is not something which one would usually associate with a major fashion house; something being so ugly that it can turn you into stone. However, Gianni Versace had a fascination with classical art and architecture, and it is with the later, beautiful representations of Medusa that the logo is associated with. During the Roman period, especially, Medusa was depicted as a beautiful woman with wild hair, and a few snakes twined here and there.

Versace himself was from Southern Italy, which still has in many ways, a close association with Greece. One cannot walk down a street in Italy and not be bombarded with trinkets and antiques which somehow allude to their ties with ancient Greece. Growing up, he would have been inundated with images such as this one, from the classical world. The Medusa insignia with the Greek key is an allusion to the classical world which all people understand. In the image being such an ancient one, it also gives a measure of class and wealth to the company. It is also an image which is instantly recognizable to almost anyone over the age of five. Greek mythology is something which most people are exposed to in their lifetime. As such, the key figures which wind throughout mythology become figures which we all recognize.

Hercules, Zeus, we are all familiar with their tales. Many of the designer's collections alluded to this connection, and almost always included Greek goddess type dresses and Greek motifs. The Medusa is also a wonderful symbol for fashion because Versace always wanted his designs to invoke some sort of goddess, or a very powerful woman, which Medusa was. His designs were also meant to stop people dead in their tracks, another of Medusa's qualities. His designs were also meant to stop people dead in their tracks, another of Medusa's qualities. In the end, Versace knew his market and chose a logo which exemplified the kind of woman he wished to design for. Versace's designs were decadent, opulent, and alluded to a far more passionate past.

Conversations With Aritists

art  may be defined as the expression or application of human creative skill or imagination, typically in visual form  such as painting or sculptures.

Over the years we''ve seen people of the western countries coming to Africa and taking what the African's consider as part of their culture and using it in their art galleries and museum. for example, a bow awas used by the san people for hunting  which was part of their culture but the british museam have use this as the work of art. this concern me,as an artist i'm convinced that anyrhing that has to do with other people's culture or religion should n't be classified as art. the reason being that whatever it is that they arte using in their culture or religion serves a certain perpose and is considered imperative for their survival. As I said that in art a person is usually expressing his own thought and skills typically in visual forms. with regards to the African bows, the san people were n't expressing anything, instead they were making what could help them in
huntingand fight enemies.

If the western people consider this as art, than frankly we have different definations of art, and there is no respect of other people's culture. art work can be used  for decoration not to serve people's needs. think of the african jar

this was used to drink "umqombothi" ( african tradditional alcohol). but  most books have classified it as art. If this wa the case  then african people would have used it for decoration or to express them selves in a more visual form.

Aficans should stop letting other people tell their story. I think us as african's can tell it better than modigliani and picasso.  this goes for the filmmakers, graffitti artists, musicians, poets etc.

Kandrick lamar says hip hop is about dissing colligeus

Kendrick Lamar called out some of hip-hop’s top acts with his verse on fellow rapper Big Sean’s ‘Control,’ claiming that rap is all about competing with colleagues.

Kendrick Lamar called out some of hip-hop’s top acts with his verse on fellow rapper Big Sean’s ‘Control,’ claiming that rap is all about competing with colleagues.

Kendrick Lamar is taking control of the hip-hop game.
The 26-year-old rapper's verse on Big Sean's single "Control," which was released Tuesday, reminded fellow lyricists what the true nature of hip-hop is … competition.
Lamar's lyrics, which begin at approximately three minutes into the song, include: "I'm usually homeboys with the same n----s I'm rhyming with/ But this is hip-hop and them n----s should know what time it is/ And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale/ Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake/ Big Sean, Jay Electron', Tyler, Mac Miller/ I got love for you all but I'm tryna murder you n----s/ Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you n----s/ They don't wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you n----s/ What is competition?"
His words sparked quite a reaction in the Twitterverse with fans and rappers alike stating their opinion.
"I hear u loud and clear my n---- … @kendricklamar," rapper Pusha T tweeted shortly after the song's release.
Even emcees who weren't called out by Lamar had something to say.
"Any studios open yet?" Brooklyn-born rapper Fabolous tweeted shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Kendrick Lamar’s verses had Twitter blazing, especially when the Compton, Calif. rapper boasted about being the King of New York, the birthplace of hip-hop.

Kendrick Lamar’s verses had Twitter blazing, especially when the Compton, Calif. rapper boasted about being the King of New York, the birthplace of hip-hop.

Missy Elliot tweeted a thank you to Lamar for reminding rap artists "2 be Lyrical and have substance again."
But what about the fact that the Compton, Calif. native also called himself the "King of New York" in the rap when he said: "I'm Makaveli's offspring I'm the King of New York/ King of the coast/ One hand I juggle them both."
"A Cali n---- just said he's the King of NY & u n----s so f---ing worried about your relationships, y'all make me sick," New Jersey rapper Joe Budden wrote. "Where's all NY!???!"
Lupe Fiasco wasn't dazzled by Lamar's words either and folded in a lyrical response in his tweet from his private account: "Y'all know y'all easily impressed. Bar so low you need a shovel to get at it."
Despite any backlash the "Poetic Justice" rapper received, his fans certainly had his back.
"Kendrick aint diss nobody he was basically saying Everything is a competition ain't no friends when you tryna get to the top," one fan wrote.
Another tweeted: "Kendrick just reminded ya'll that this is Hip Hop. A competition of words. No rap beef … just lyrical challenge. As it should be."
But Diddy arguably said it best when he simply tweeted: "

HOW MEDIA VIOLENCE AFFECTS PEOPLE

decides to use violence in order to deal with the situation. This May motivates people who are in the same situation to use violence because megamind has proved that it’s the only way out. Just like I said before, its takes time for one to imitate what they so in films but eventually they do without realizing it. Most violent films repeat the same message that violence is the only way to go.  I’m convinced that repeated exposure to similar messages makes it easier for people to accept them as true, and more importantly, act as though they’re true. even when they know the messages are false.  Just consider how TV ads are repeated. The companies behind ads are willing to pay for such repetition. As results of this repetition of similar messages on films people end up imitating it because it is installed into their minds.
When it comes to the city of god, I think the most important factor to point out is that it shows way too many strategies as to how to lead a gang of criminals and run a successful drug business all at the same time.  The message in this film is not encouraging people to join gangsters but it’s indirectly giving them clues as to how to go about doing what I’ve just mentioned above. This will promote violence to someone who is more exposed to these kinds of films.
Video games
Violent games are directly affecting people to act out in violence. This is because they are interactive with the gamer hence he has no power to resist the effects. Unfortunately these violent games encourages killing, in fact the gamer gains a point for every character he has killed in the game. One thing I’ve noticed about these video games is that the characters are made to look like human beings in every possible way. Even the lab setting looks real. This means that video games simulate what could happen in real life and this has serious psychological effect on the gamer. We all know that these games are highly addictive.
Violent video games induce aggressive thought and behavior. Much like films, its takes time for one to actually start behaving aggressively as a result of too much exposure to violent games. Playing video games is like smoking cigarettes, a single cigarette won’t cause lung cancer but smoking over weeks or months or years greatly increases the risk. In the same way, repeated exposure to violent video games may have cumulative effects on aggression. Consider how aggressive a person act if he is losing in a game, this is evident that gamers have accepted the video game characters as real. At the back of their mind they know that it’s just an animation but due to it human like qualities the illusion seem to be real. This makes it much easier for people who play these games to end up being violent. It is said that Adam Lanza (20 year old behind the horrific shooting rampage in Newtown. conn.) was obsessed with these bloody video games. It took him a long time to imitate the violence he saw in the games but he did, this statement confirms my point that it does not happen overnight for one to be influenced.
As a child I was once exposed to a violent video game which was called the street fighter. I was very good at playing it in such a way that I ended up seeing myself as one of these super hero characters. The only thing I kept thinking about at that time was violence. When I did not see eye to eye with my siblings or anyone else I’d try to imitate this violence. So I am a living testimony that video games do influence an individual to act out in violence but the process start psychologically. Once the person start seeing the characters as real people, that where the problem begins. Most of the time you hear the gamer making comments about his character as if his real person. The things we talk about the most are what we end up doing.
 Music
Music is the easiest medium to convey a massege reason being most songs are catchy. Musicians do this intentionally so that fans could easily sing along. The most horrifying moment is hearing a person reciting violent lyrics with practically no thinking about the message in in these lyrics. Sadly most violent songs promote murder, theft; drug use etc. repeated messages are easily installed in our minds and easy to remember. Again think of TV ads. Unfortunately people who recite these violent lyrics are celebrities who are very influential and has millions of followers (kanye west, lil wayne etc.). Most people aspire to be like these public figures, hence adopt their life style. That includes dress code, accent etc. if lil wayne rap about guns (lil wayne.gunwalk.2013.YMCMB) automatically his followers will want to have guns. Since he has millions of followers and at least a third of them want to be like him, then a violent society will result. If a person is willing to change the way they look because of some celebrity, then it’s possible for them to change their behavior for the same reason (think of stan, Eminem’s number one fan).
The thing about music is that the listener has no power to oppose a message that is being passed on to him because its recorded, so he just accepts it has it is. Whether it promote violence or not. Just like I said before. Repeated messages’ tend to make us believe that something is real even if its not, that goes for music too. We often hear these violent songs repeatedly and start believing in them. This may lead to us being violent.

Expert agrees that violent lyrics increase aggressive thought and behavior. According to Craig A Anderson, PhD of lowa state university.  Aggressive thought can influence perceptions of on going social interactions, coloring them with an aggressive tint. Such aggression- biased interpretations can, in turn, instigate a more aggressive response- verbal or physical than would have been emitted in a non biased state.
